بتوليته ولد الشهيد أبو فام أواخر النصف الثاني من القرن الثالث الميلادي في مدينة أوسيم من أبوين تقيين هما أنسطاسيوس وسوسنة، وكان والده أنسطاسيوس رجلاً غنيًا جدًا وتقيًا محبًا للفقراء والمساكين كما كانت أمه سوسنة امرأة متعبدة تسلك في وصايا الرب بلا لوم
وما أن اشتد عود الصبي حتى أرسله والده إلى كاهن قديس يدعى أرسانيوس ليتتلمذ على يديه، وبالرغم من الغِنَى الشديد الذي كان يحيط بالصبي إلا أنه عاش حياة نسكية زاهدة
لما كبر فام فاتحه والده في أمر الزواج، إلا أن القديس كان قد وضع في قلبه أن يحيا حياة البتولية
استشهاده حين بدأ اضطهاد المسيحيين في عهد الإمبراطور مكسيميانوس قَبَض إريانا والي أنصنا على القديس أبي فام، وفي الليلة التي قُبِض عليه فيها ظهر له ميخائيل رئيس الملائكة وقوّاه وشجّعه على احتمال الألم
في الصباح ودَّع القديس والديه وأصدقاءه ولبس حلة بهيّة وذهب لملاقاة الوالي
حيَّاهُ إريانا بتحية السلام إلا أن القديس ردَّ عليه بأن "لا سلام قال إلهي للأشرار"
وحاول معه الوالي لكي يُقَرِّب ويبخّر لأبلّون وأرطاميس الآلهة، فأجابه القديس: "لن أسجد لآلهتك لأنها صُنِعت بالأيادي، لن أترك إلهي رب السماء والأرض الذي أحبني يسوع المسيح الذي مات من أجلي"
حين سمع إريانا هذا الكلام بدأ في تعذيبه بقسوة، ثم أمر جنوده بربط القديس في مؤخرة حصان ويسحلوه في شوارع مدينة أوسيم
أرسله إريانا إلى الإمبراطور مكسيميانوس في إنطاكية، الذي أمر جنوده بإغراقه في البحر، إلا أن الرب أرسل درفيلاً حمل القديس إلى البر أمام الحشد الكبير الواقف
عادوا بالقديس إلى الإسكندرية برسالة من الإمبراطور مكسيميانوس إلى الوالي أرمانيوس يأمره بتعذيب أبو فام بكل أنواع العذاب حتى يرجع ويبخر للأوثان، فأذاقه الوالي بشتى أنواع العذاب
في وسط آلامه ظهر له رئيس الملائكة ميخائيل وشفاه وعزّاه بكلمات طيّبة، ولما رأى أرمانيوس عجزه أرسل القديس مرة أخرى إلى إريانا ليقتله
أذاقه إريانا ألوانًا أخرى من العذابات، فعلّقه على خشبة ثم أمر جنوده أن يخزّقوا عقبيّ القديس ويربطوهما بسلسلتين، ويجرّوه بهما على الأرض حتى سال دمه طول الطريق إلى أن وصلوا إلى شاطئ النهر
ركبوا السفينة وسارت بهم إلى أن وصلوا مدينة قاو قبالة قرية تدعى طما وهناك توقّف سير السفينة، وعبثًا حاولوا ولو بقوة السحر تحريكها، فأخذ إريانا القديس أبا فام وأمر جنوده فقطعوا رأسه بحد السيف
حمله أهل المدينة بإكرام وهم يردّدون الألحان، ودفنوه غربيّ قرية طما، وفيما بعد بُنِيَت كنيسة في ذلك الموضع
وفي أواخر عام 1995م أثناء توسيع الكنيسة المبنية على اسمه، تم اكتشاف جسد القديس أبي فام في يمين الداخل إلى باب الهيكل
تُعيِّد له الكنيسة القبطية في السابع والعشرين من شهر طوبة تذكارًا لاستشهاده، وأيضًا في السابع والعشرين من شهر أبيب، وهو ذكرى تدشين كنيسته في مدينة طما محافظة سوهاج، كما أن نفس اليوم يوافق ذكرى ميلاد القديس
يُلَقَّب القديس أبو فام بالجندي مع أنه لم يكن من الضباط أو الجنود، ذلك لأنه قد عاش كجندي صالح ليسوع المسيح ملتزمًا بوصاياه
