ولحسن طلعته وجمال صورته صار تذمر في الإسقيط بسببه، إذ قالوا: "كيف يكون صبي مثل هذا في البرية بين الرهبان؟" فلما سمع القديس زكريا بهذا ذهب إلى بحيرة النطرون ومن غير أن يُعلم أحدًا، وخلع ثيابه ونزل في البركة وانغمس فيها عدة ساعات فتحول لون جسمه إلى السواد وصار كالمجذوم، ثم صعد من الماء ولبس ثيابه وأتى إلى أبيه، فلم يعرفه إلا بعد أن تفرس فيه جيدًا، ولما سأله عن الذي غير منظره أعلمه بما عمل
لما كان يوم الأحد مضى مع أبيه إلى الكنيسة ليتناول الأسرار المقدسة، فكشف الله للقديس إيسيذورس قس الإسقيط ما صنعه القديس زكريا، فتعجب وقال للرهبان: "إن زكريا تقدم في الأحد الماضي كإنسانٍ، أما الآن فقد صار ملاكًا"
حاز هذا القديس جميع الفضائل وخصوصًا التواضع، فكان فيه كاملاً حتى أن أباه قال عنه: "إنني تحملت تعبًا كثيرًا في الجهاد ولكنني لم أصل إلى رتبة ابني زكريا"
أقام هذا القديس مجاهدًا وناسكًا خمسًا وأربعين سنة، ودخل إلى البرية وهو ابن سبع سنين، فكانت أيام حياته اثنتين وخمسين سنة، ثم تنيح بسلام
